The governance of the New Zealand Geospatial Strategy is three-tiered, comprising the Joint Ministerial Group, the Geospatial Executives Group (GEG) and the Geospatial Steering Committee (GSC). The role of the New Zealand Geospatial Office (NZGO) is also outlined below.

The Geospatial Executives Group (GEG) is responsible for managing the successful delivery of the New Zealand Geospatial Strategy. The GEG represents various sectors and agencies with significant geospatial programmes of work. It is chaired by the Chief Executive of Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) and is comprised of five government agency Chief Executives, as well as the Chair of the Spatial Industries Business Association (SIBA) and the CEO of the New Zealand ICT Group (NZICT):

The Geospatial Steering Committee (GSC) reports to the GEG and is responsible for overseeing the work programme to implement the Strategy. The GSC is chaired by the Geospatial Custodian and comprises ten members representing a range of government agencies and sectors:

The NZGO is headed by the Geospatial Custodian and is the coordinating body for implementing the Strategy. Activities carried out by the NZGO in support of this include:
NZGO has a reporting line within Land Information New Zealand (LINZ), as well as to the Geospatial Executives Group in order to maintain a sectoral approach.
