Who's Involved

The governance of the New Zealand Geospatial Strategy is three-tiered, comprising the Joint Ministerial Group, the Geospatial Executives Group (GEG) and the Geospatial Steering Committee (GSC). The role of the New Zealand Geospatial Office (NZGO) is also outlined below.

Geospatial Strategy governance structure

Joint Ministerial Group

The Ministers jointly responsible for the Strategy are:

Geospatial Executives Group (GEG)

The GEG is chaired by the Chief Executive of Land Information New Zealand and is made up of chief executives of key public agencies. It is collectively accountable for the direction and implementation of the Strategy.

As at September 2009, the GEG consisted of chief executives (or functional equivalents) of:

Geospatial Steering Committee (GSC)

The GSC is chaired by the Geospatial Custodian. The GSC advises the GEG and is responsible for developing and running the work programme to implement the Strategy.

As at April 2010, the GSC consists of representatives of:

New Zealand Geospatial Office (NZGO)

The NZGO is headed by the Geospatial Custodian and is the coordinating body for implementing the New Zealand Geospatial Strategy. Activities carried out by the NZGO in support of this include:

  • promoting greater capture, access and interoperability of geospatial data
  • advising government on policy for geospatial information
  • facilitating communication between members of the geospatial community
  • supporting an all-of-government work programme under the Strategy
  • supporting the transition to a revised structure, approved in early-2009, for the governance of the Strategy.

NZGO has a reporting line within Land Information New Zealand (LINZ), as well as to the Geospatial Executives Group in order to maintain a sectoral approach.
