VLBI - a New Tool for Geodesy in New Zealand

The following article on very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) was published in the June 2009 edition of Survey Quarterly, by Graeme Blick of Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) and Sergei Gulyaev of the Auckland University of Technology (AUT).

The article covers:

  • AUT's radio telescope, opened in late 2008
  • the radio telescope's role in the Australia-New Zealand bid to host the Square Kilometre Array
  • what geodetic VLBI is
  • the expansion of radio telescopes (and use of VLBI) in the Southern Hemisphere
  • determining global reference frames, and
  • LINZ's role in supporting the radio telescope and global geodesy.

The article is available at the LINZ website in HTML and PDF formats:
