"The United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) today voted to establish a committee of experts on global geospatial information management to coordinate international dialogue on spatial data infrastructures and enhance cooperation in that field" (UN News Centre, 27 July 2011).

Also note that in December

Also note that in December 2011 there will be a Summit (Eye on Earth Summit) focusing on Environmental Information. This Summit is co-organised by UNEP and the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency.
The outcomes of this Summit include Environmental Information Gaps, Sharing of information and infrastructure thru initiatives such as UNSDI, GEOSS and other regional SDI programmes and input into RIO +20.
