Christmas Message
As 2008 draws to a close, we can look back on a rather tumultuous few months and a very different future. It is hard to believe that the largest challenge we faced a few months ago was where we were going to find sufficient numbers of skilled staff to cope with the high demand for our services. Well, that issue has certainly disappeared and we are poised at the edge of a new and very different world.
It seems, therefore, rather prophetic that, for the Spatial Sciences Institute, 2009 will really be a year of change. A Special General Meeting of SSI will be held in February so that members can vote on the proposed merger between SSI and the Institute of Surveyors Australia. The merger working group, on behalf of the Boards of both organisations, has completed the prospectus outlining the new Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute. This prospectus will be mailed to all SSI members in January. However, an advance copy of the prospectus will be available on the Institute website by Christmas.
SSI is also planning a series of events during 2009, the most important of which will be the biennial Spatial Sciences Conference in Adelaide at the beginning of October, so mark that in your diaries now and get your abstracts written during the relatively quiet Christmas and New Year period.
Finally, I anticipate that 2009 will also be a groundbreaking year for our certification process, which has slowly been gaining recognition this year. The SSI Certified General Practitioner will continue to be available into the future, and the professional certification process is becoming available for all disciplines covered by SSI. The GISP-AP and the remote sensing professional certification has had significant numbers of members applying this year and the Engineering and Mining Surveyor professional certification process will become available for eligible members early in 2009. All certification processes will continue through the new organisation.
On behalf of the Board and staff of SSI, I would like to wish all of you, and your families, a great Christmas and New Year and I look forward to working with you in 2009.
Dr Marnie Leybourne
President
