LINZ has made the NZ Topo series and other data freely available to the public that I have used to create NZ Topo Map.
It is an interactive topographic map of New Zealand that uses the official LINZ 1:50,000 / Topo50 and 1:250,000 / Topo250 maps. Stewart Island and the often neglected Chatham Islands are also covered.
NZ Topo Map is an excellent research resource and a great reference for outdoors enthusiasts with coordinate conversion functionality that supports both NZTM and NZMG coordinate systems. Sections of a map can be easily selected and printed out in high resolution and a mobile/smart-device friendly version is also available at http://m.topomap.co.nz.
Searching for and locating any landscape feature on the map is easy. You can find towns, streams, caves, glaciers, forests, huts and mountains. To share or bookmark a feature’s location simply use the map link.
Advanced users can add a KML overlay to these maps to layer rich detail onto a track or area. As NZ Topo Map’s popularity has grown, more features have been added as suggested by users.
Owners of blogs and websites dedicated to outdoor pursuits can use the embeddable map option which allows for direct sharing of maps within web pages.
I’m actively developing and maintaining this personal project and it’s a real passion of mine. I hope you find it useful.

Hi Steve, glad you like
Hi Steve, glad you like it...
I have actually been playing with the idea of creating a nautical chart version, but there will be a bit of a wait as there's a few other things on the wish list first. The first item on the list is an NZ Topo Map mobile app which will allow you to take offline topo maps bush with you (currently in early stages of development).
Cheers,

Don't suppose there are any plans for something similar for our nautical charts? :P
