Implementing an SDI

Last week the NZGO took the first steps towards establishing a national spatial data infrastructure (SDI) for New Zealand. The publication, in the form of a cookbook, focuses on initial guidance for implementing an SDI targeted to government agencies and others interested in participating.

The cookbook aids the identification of the foundational elements of a SDI.

The initial approach toward SDI recognises the widespread adoption of contemporary geospatial information management solutions (GIS). Commonly, contemporary GIS solutions embed options for sharing information via standard web interface protocols, however relatively few organisations have considered implementing these options so far.

Version one of the SDI Cookbook encourages more organisations to consider adopting online or transactional options for exposing their geospatial data.

Last week the NZGO released a Request for Information (RFI) to market for the contribution of guidance on how existing GIS products support SDI components.

Responses will be added to the cookbook to provide further information and context to organisations seeking to participate in SDI.

Your feedback will contribute to the development of the SDI and can be submitted on the NZGO website.
