Google Earth 5.0 was launched today, giving users the ability to explore the ocean floor, Mars and travel back in time.
The new Explore the Ocean feature allows users to zoom beneath the ocean's surface to navigate the seabed, underwater volcanoes and dive spots such as the wreck of the Rainbow Warrior. Information on other wrecks, including the Wahine, is also available.
Armchair exploration of Mars has been made possible through a collaboration between Google and NASA. Mars 3D includes the latest high-resolution imagery of the red planet and annotated points of interest, such as landing sites.
The fourth dimension can also be manipulated in the 5.0 release, with a time slider allowing users to reveal historical images and see how a location has changed over time.
Read more about the Google Earth 5.0 release in Greer McDonald's Dominion Post article or in Google Earth and Maps Director John Hanke's post at the Official Google Blog.
