Geovisualisation OSS Seminar Commuting patterns in New Zealand

 Event Date: Thursday 24 September 2009, 2:30pm to 3:30pm

Commuting patterns in New Zealand have come under increasing scrutiny because of growing public and government interest in sustainability. This interest arose because of legislative changes, such as the Local Government Act 2002, which required local councils to consider sustainability in their 10-year development plans. Larger city councils have promoted more sustainable commuting options such as public transport, walking, and cycling. Better information about commuting is important to help inform government and society.

In response to demand from planners and local councils for better information on commuting, in July 2009, Statistics New Zealand produced a report, Commuting Patterns in New Zealand: 1996-2006, and an experimental interactive visualisation product. The DVD, which is available on request, contains approximately 80 visualisations including travel to work and home by mode of transport, occupation, industry, and ethnic group.

The report can be found here.

This presentation will showcase the innovative visualisation techniques and discuss the methodologies that were developed. Three different techniques were applied to commuting data: developing information about distance travelled, visualising flows, and primary linkage analysis (producing experimental labour market areas). The original report focused on the cities of Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, but for this seminar we have expanded the analysis to include information for Dunedin and Hamilton, after an enthusiastic response from local papers highlighting the widespread regional interest in commuting patterns.

To register:

Please complete the online registration form.

Numbers are limited and places will be allocated on a first come-first served basis.

The Spectrum Theatre is located at BP House on the corner of Customhouse Quay and Johnston St. Access is from Johnston Street via Spectrum Health & Fitness Reception.

A PDF copy of this advert is available on the Statisphere website.

Official Statistics Forum 2010

 Event Date: 24-25 March 2010

The theme of the 2010 Official Statistics Forum is on realising the value of official statistics, both in the sense of the awareness of that value, and the fulfilment of the potential of that value.

Every few years the users and producers of official statistics meet to share their knowledge and experience of the Official Statistics System (OSS), the wealth of information it represents, and to review the user needs for such statistics.

The forum is convened by Statistics New Zealand, the leaders of the OSS. It is an opportunity to see how well the OSS is meeting its goals by bringing together the people who produce the information with the end users of those resources.

Producers of official statistics are also able to share knowledge and innovations in the techniques used to collect, produce, store, and disseminate statistics.

Users of statistics can share the latest ideas on the way this information can be utilised, from analysis and manipulation to forecasting and modelling.

The importance of the role of official statistics is both emphasised and challenged in times of economic recession, so the timeliness of this forum is significant.

The event will feature a mix of keynotes speakers, panel discussions, and concurrent sessions.

Call for papers

Submission of papers is now open for the concurrent sessions by those working in any area of official statistics: production, analysis or representation. Skilled practitioners in the following areas are particularly encouraged to submit a paper:

Where to Next: Innovation, future directions and filling the gaps

Working Smarter: Collaboration, investment, reducing overlaps and doing more with existing resources

Real Life: Examples of the use, analysis or integration of statistics.

Presentations should be approximately 25 minutes in length.

Submissions close on 14 September. Please submit papers using the form available at the Official Statistics Forum webpage.

Open Govt Data Barcamp & Hack-fest

 Event Date: 29-30 August 2009

The New Zealand Open Government Bar Camp is an "unconference" for people who are interested in making government-held data more freely available for others to re-use. An "unconference" is an alternative participant-driven event, that avoids aspects of a conventional conference, such as high fees and sponsored presentations.

Web 2.0 developments have shown the potential of combining data from different sources made freely available on the Internet. The government holds a huge range of non-personal data which could form the basis of innovative services and applications by others on the Internet.

You should attend if you are interested in government information policy, exploring ways to provide data, making entrepreneurial use of the Internet, or building working applications during a weekend.

See http://groups.google.co.nz/group/nzopengovtbarcamp

Event Date: 28 September to 2 October 2009

The biennial conference is billed as the premier event for spatial sciences in the Australasian region. It attracts a large and diverse audience and in 2009 will embrace a new format. The South Australian regional committee for the Spatial Sciences Institute is very excited about the event, which will provide cutting edge developments in the application of spatial science to a diverse set of disciplines, communities and people: indeed this diversity is the inspiration for the conference theme of Spatial Diversity.

The conference theme, Spatial Diversity, will be delivered to you via plenary and keynote presentations, technical papers, symposia, workshops, competitions, awards, site visits, dinners, lunches, coffee, exhibitions, breakfasts, walks and talks. Conference organisers are attracting key players in the industries where spatial information is so important - environment, mining, defence, land administration, agriculture, disaster management and more. Together with these people conference organisers are engaging a large range of exhibitors of technology and applications.

In 2009 the Conference, SSI and ASIBA will host the Asia Pacific Spatial Excellence Awards (APSEA); so here is another great reason to visit Adelaide.
